Eight & Sand is a railroad term that represents a swift and safe journey. It reflects the closely held values of founder Jeff R. Dingwall; personal, efficient, agile, creative, intuitive and above all, unrelenting. We strive for smooth and quick resolutions but more importantly, we’re with you for the long haul.
Though based in California, we represent men and women all across the country through associations with other lawyers. People come to us because we are not afraid to take on challenging areas of the law and because we love to bring the fight to the government and corporate powers that take advantage of good people.
The most important thing we can do is learn about and understand you. It is only through knowing your personal story that we can bring your truth to light and move a jury to do justice for you. To us you are not a “case” or even a “client,” you are a person that deserves the best and most personal representation possible. We promise you nothing less.
YOUR RIGHT TO A JURY
It is often overlooked but the right to a jury trial is guaranteed by the Constitution in both criminal and civil cases. Corporations have fought for years to diminish our Seventh Amendment right to civil jury trials and many lawyers are simply not willing to fight through to trial. We believe that a jury verdict is the best form of justice and we are dedicated to protecting that right for you so that you receive the best possible outcome.
NICE TO MEET YOU
My life experiences have prepared me to devote myself to fighting with you and for you for what is right and what is just.
I opened my law practice immediately after passing the California bar with a commitment to helping those injured and killed by railroads in a vastly different way than the tired status quo of years past. I have expanded that commitment to helping people of all walks of life who need help getting their lives back on track.
Outside of work I love my Oregon State Beavers, I’m working on becoming a guitar legend, and I occasionally hit the green in regulation.
JIM BROWN | OF COUNSEL
“The Real Deal”
We call him the “real” Jim Brown, not because he shares his name with a famous running back and the Godfather of Soul, but because our Jim Brown is authentic as they come. Throughout his career as the owner of Law Offices of James Matthew Brown, APLC, Jim has established himself as a preeminent trial lawyer, a trusted resource in the legal community, and an exceptional teacher and mentor. Jim is everything that we at Eight & Sand hold dear and we are thrilled to have him share his talent and experience with us.
Speaking of his talent and experience, Jim has piled up a list of accolades and courtroom victories since he began practicing in 1981, including trying more than 75 cases to verdict and achieving millions in pre-trial settlements for people injured or killed through the negligence of others. Most recently, Jim has successfully fought on behalf of minors who were the victims of sex abuse, obtaining a remarkable $3.5 million verdict in one case and achieving a confidential seven-figure settlement in another.
When he’s not in trial, Jim devotes his time to helping other lawyers improve their courtroom skills. After graduating from the elite Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College, he was handpicked to serve on the staff of the College and now travels the country training new and experienced attorneys alike to better serve their clients and achieve greater success at trial.

Do I Need a lawyer?
It is very difficult to know all of your rights and to navigate the legal process on your own. If you have been injured or otherwise harmed, it is a good idea to talk with a lawyer as soon as possible. We never charge a consultation fee and we are happy to meet with you to discuss your potential case.
How much do you charge?
This depends on the situation but we typically work on a contingency basis, meaning that we get paid an agreed percentage of the ultimate recovery, whether by settlement, verdict or otherwise. If there is no money recovered then we do not charge a fee.
How long does the legal process take?
It is difficult to say for sure. Some cases settle within months while others may take years to resolve. A safe estimate is that it takes about two years for a case to get to trial. We will always keep you informed and do everything we can to move the case along as quickly as possible.
How do I choose the right lawyer?
This comes down to who you feel the most comfortable with. The best lawyers do more listening than they do talking, they spend less time focusing on what they have done in the past and more on what they can do for you, they are always open and honest with you, and they are not afraid to go to trial if necessary.
What type of cases do you handle?
We represent people throughout California and the United States who have been injured (physically, emotionally, financially) or killed through the negligence and wrongdoing of another. We have successfully represented people injured in car accidents and railroad accidents, victims of abuse and retaliation, and those injured by dangerous property conditions.
“Achievement comes not from avoiding the problems. On the contrary, achievement comes from diving into problems and transforming them into positive, meaningful value.”
